About Yoga Nidra

The Practice of Yoga Nidra is the ancient Yogic science of deep relaxation and guided meditation. Yoga Nidra, “the sleep of the Yogi” is a profound state of relaxation, experienced as a completely effortless state of peace and pure bliss.

This is a transformational state between wakefulness and deep sleep that enhances physical, mental, and emotional sense of well-being by releasing tensions accumulated and held in these layers of our being to help us connect with the always present inner reservoir of ease, contentment, and joy within. This joy is who we are!

Studies show that about 80% of all illnesses stem from stress. Yoga Nidra practice is a powerful tool for whole self restoration and stress reduction practice that brings renewal, restoration and rejuvenation to the physical body and ultimately to our whole self. You might find that one session of Yoga Nidra can feel as though you’ve had 3-4hrs of deep, restful sleep!

Research shows that the process of conscious relaxation we experience in Yoga Nidra reliably stimulates the parasympathetic nervous system response in the body.  When unrelieved, chronic stress fills us with anxiety and dangerous levels of stress hormones like cortisol – Yoga Nidra is proven to reduce the release of these hormones and the many stress-related diseases they can cause.

Based in the Tantric technique of “nyasa,” this practice brings together the Indian Yogic methods of alert and relaxed concentration, compassionate observation, and guided visualization to help withdraw the senses from the external world and move the awareness into the deeper layers of the mind.  These methods help brain waves slow down bringing about a state of conscious deep relaxation and bliss.

In this highly receptive and completely effortless state of being, the ego is quieted and left behind, opening the doors to receive insight from the deeper levels of inner knowing- from the unconscious mind. By resting us in this expanded state of awareness, Yoga Nidra helps us awaken to unconscious barriers such as self-limiting thoughts, unhelpful habits, long-held fears, and negative emotions – and empowers us to release these deep obstacles and energy blockages that can prevent us from living the life we desire and deserve.  In this blissful, effortless state of being, we’re able to tap into the brilliance of our intuition so that we can meet life’s challenges with greater ease, clarity, and compassion and actualize our most heart-felt aspirations.

In this effortless state of being, we can connect with our highest wisdom. We’re empowered to actualize our most heart-felt intentions.  In Sanskrit there is a word for our most heart-felt intentions – Sankalpa.  Sankalpa is a resolve that is a reflection of your highest truth, a seed you can create and then plant in the fertile soil of your mind during the practice of Yoga Nidra.

Yoga Nidra is a profound tool of limitless possibilities of holistic healing and  transformation, and joy for us to use regularly.  Class sessions will be complemented with a short period of Yin or Restorative asana (floor postures) and pranayama (directed breathwork) to help prepare body, heart, and mind for the deeper work of the Yoga Nidra Practice. Yoga Nidra is typically performed in the position of Savasana lying on the back with cushions and blankets for support and relaxation. Alternative positions are offered and encouraged as needed to meet individual needs and to ensure maximum comfort. For this program, we recommend dressing comfortably in layers and you may wish to bring a light kerchief or eye pillow to cover the eyes.

No experience necessary. All students are welcome!

Join us to explore and experience this life-changing journey of  pure joy and transformation!

It was an honor and a thrill to spend the weekend learning and practicing with such a skilled, friendly, organized, and warm teacher. Thank you Sagel.” – MB, Boston
